Our Story Began with a Food Truck
In 2019, Joy & I d I started our journey with the Thai Won On food truck. She’s Thai, and her cooking is the heart of everything we do. We served made-to-order Thai dishes and quickly built a loyal following. Then came COVID. Like many small businesses, we faced tough times—but we made it through.
From Truck to Restaurant
After the pandemic, we decided it was time for a change. We traded in the food truck and opened our first brick-and-mortar spot. It started out just like the truck—fresh Thai food, cooked to order. But we noticed something: people on lunch breaks wanted great food, fast.
Enter Fish and Chips
To meet that need, we added British food to our menu. I’m originally from the UK, and my old school friend Tim—whose family ran a chip shop for 40 years—shared his recipes with us. Soon, our fish and chips became just as popular as our Thai dishes.
The Birth of The British Embassy
Seeing how well the British menu did, we took a leap. In September 2024, we opened The British Embassy at 1116 E Main St, Richmond, VA 23219. We focused fully on British classics in a sit-down space downtown. It was a big step, but the response was amazing. In May of 2025 we went full circle and added a full Thai Menu.
Two Cultures, One Kitchen
After getting through the Great Richmond Water Crisis in early 2025, we felt it was time to return to our roots. So now, we’re excited to bring back our Thai menu alongside our full British offerings. It’s not a fusion—it’s a shared space where both cuisines shine.
What Makes Us Special
At The British Embassy, we do things the right way—with care, tradition, and flavor. At our dual-concept, British Our dishes are made from scratch using homemade recipes passed down from family and friends. We proudly offer both vegan and gluten-free options, so everyone can enjoy a great meal.
We also have a bar, serving wine & beer, plus a lively Happy Hour that's perfect for unwinding after work. Whether you're here for Thai or British classics, there's something special for everyone.
